The Vibrational State (VS) is a phenomenon documented in the literature of sleep medicine and neuroscience, but it remains poorly formalized within out-of-body experiences (OBEs). It is experienced during transitional sleep states, such as sleep paralysis, as well as in certain advanced contemplative practices. It is characterized by the emergence of intense, widespread vibratory sensations, often described as electric and pulsating, associated with a profound alteration of bodily consciousness and capable of inducing an OBE.
Unlike respiratory approaches (all forms of breathwork, voluntary hyperventilation, pranayama-type techniques), the VS can be induced spontaneously without any modulation of breathing.
This suggests that its primary mechanism is not respiratory, but rather relies on a reconfiguration of interoceptive attention, neuro-autonomic regulation, and an expanded mode of perception (an altered state of consciousness).
In my recent work using high-density EEG, the voluntary induction of the VS is associated with a specific neurophysiological profile, distinct from classical parasympathetic relaxation states. This provides valuable insight into the mechanisms underlying the voluntary induction of the VS.
These findings support the hypothesis that the VS corresponds to an extremely specific neurophysiological state, characterized by brain modulation that is profoundly different from that observed in non-ordinary altered states of consciousness experienced during meditation by experts with decades of contemplative practice, regardless of the meditation style.
Furthermore, the VS is linked to a voluntary modulation of vital energies, understood here not as a mystical concept, but as a natural state: an interoceptive experience emerging from a perception of the deep human nature of what we are—an energetic being—beyond measurable neurobiological processes.
For further information, I refer readers to my article published in issue 20 of AutoRicerca (2020), as well as to the seminars I offer through the Sleep Consciousness Institute.
In all likelihood, around September (2026), I will also offer a workshop at LAB. As soon as the date is finalized, the information will be posted on the LAB website and communicated via its mailing list.
